NewsMap Privacy Policy
You can browse NewsMap without signing in. Optional IdeasQuantified accounts are shared with WhereTo. Signing in lets us associate saved places, follows, Watches, usage allowances, notification registrations, and subscription access with your account. We do not sell personal information.
Location and map requests
Browser location permission is optional. The map also works without it. Requests for map tiles, nearby places, weather, hazards, and area briefings can include the area or coordinates you select. Our backend and the relevant data providers process those requests. Shared map links can reveal the map area you were viewing.
Accounts, billing, and deletion
Supabase provides account identity and data storage. We use your email for sign-in and associate account features and usage with your user identifier. Stripe handles card payments; card details are entered with Stripe. App Store and Google Play purchases are managed through those stores.
Use Account → Delete account to request deletion of your shared NewsMap and WhereTo identity and associated personal data. Deletion removes saved places, follows, Watches, push registrations, personal usage records, and unused AI credits. Our Stripe subscriptions are canceled and the associated Stripe customer records are deleted before completion. Store subscriptions require separate cancellation in the store. Deletion does not settle outstanding invoices or automatically issue refunds, and does not waive applicable refund rights.
A saved request is not a completed deletion. Your private receipt reports progress and confirms completion after cleanup is verified. Minimal pseudonymized billing and deletion records remain for 30 days after reconciliation is resolved; unresolved records remain available for review. Payment providers retain their own transaction records. Contact support for refund requests or help with a pending deletion.
Data stored on your device
NewsMap keeps a small amount of data in your browser, all removable by clearing site data:
- Account session and deletion receipt — sign-in state and a private receipt for checking deletion progress.
- Preferences — which map layers you have on or off (localStorage).
- News cache — recently fetched articles, kept for a few minutes so filter changes are instant (sessionStorage; cleared when the tab closes).
- App cache — NewsMap is an installable web app, so the app shell and map styles are cached for fast loading and offline resilience.
NewsMap sets no cookies and runs no analytics or advertising scripts.
Share links
The address bar encodes the current map view (position, zoom, filters) so you can share or bookmark it. A link you share therefore reveals the map area you were looking at — including, if you were zoomed into your own neighborhood, that area. Share links contain nothing else.
Services your browser talks to
NewsMap uses our backend and data providers, including the sources below. Like any web request, these requests expose your IP address and the requested resource to that service, under its own privacy policy. Map tile requests inherently indicate the area of the map you are viewing.
- News — the GDELT Project, via our Cloudflare Worker proxy (needed because GDELT doesn't support direct browser requests). The proxy is stateless and keeps no logs of its own; Cloudflare processes requests to serve and cache responses.
- Hazards — USGS (earthquakes), NOAA/NWS (weather alerts), NASA EONET (wildfires and natural events), and RainViewer (rain radar).
- Basemaps — CARTO map tiles and Esri satellite imagery.
- Article images — thumbnails and favicons load from news publishers' own servers and Google's favicon service.
